Seminar Volunteer
Our annual February Genealogy Seminar has several positions for short-term volunteer opportunities:
- “Uber” our national speaker as needed, from the airport to hotel to library to dinner. You provide the car and auto insurance. A great way to get to know the speaker better!
- Serve on the food committee, make coffee, set out snacks, oversee the teen volunteers, monitor lunch distribution.
- Request and gather prize donations.
- Oversee the book sale and donations.
- Set up tables and chairs before event and restore room afterwards.
Find-a-Grave Cemetery Content Provider
We have canvassed and photographed headstones at all our nearby cemeteries. Now we need you to upload to PGS Find-a-Grave. This can be done from home using your own computer or from the Largo Library PGS computers.
Consultant
Give one-on-one assistance to patrons in the Largo Library genealogy department. Approximately 3 hours a week, schedules can vary. Requires research experience and use of computers in genealogy research. Orientation and training are provided.
Adopt-A-State
“Adopt” a section of books by state in the genealogy collection. Review them at least once a month to replace damaged labels, ensure they are in the correct order, etc. Training is provided.
Instructor (genealogy topic of your choice)
Requires in-depth knowledge of subject area and ability to speak in front of groups.
Records Transcriber and Indexer
Transcribe information from microfilmed marriage records or family records in donated Bibles to a database for publishing on our website.
Family History Scanner and/or Indexer
Scan family histories and save on the computer using our naming convention. Scanning requires some training and must be done at the library.
Index by reviewing saved record images then record surnames and page numbers. Indexing can be done from home using your own computer.
Surname and Locality File Maintenance
Create and add folders of donated research materials to our existing files. Also create an index of our holdings to publish on our website.
Obituary Indexer
Record basic information from newspaper obituaries and update paper files. Can be done from home.
Research Committee Member
Provide local research (obituary lookups and more) for people outside this area who email us for assistance. May involve trips to St. Petersburg and Clearwater libraries.
One-on-One Help in Special Areas
Based on your specific skillset, provide one-on-one help in special areas of research. The areas can be specific geographic areas, translations, computer assistance, etc. By phone, email, or at the library.
PGS Table Display Representative
Set up the PGS table display with handouts and promote the society and genealogy to interested persons at local events. Minimum of four events a year, with others determined by volunteer availability and community need.
Refreshment Coordinator
Coordinate provision of refreshments at monthly PGS meetings and staff the refreshment table.
Historian
Requires some experience with PGS. Involves recording events, writing annual summary of PGS activity and accomplishments, and organizing photos taken by yourself or contributed by others.
