Famed genealogist, legal expert, and popular speaker Judy G. Russell will appear live and in person at the Pinellas Genealogy Society annual seminar on Saturday, 22 February 2025. The event will be presented in-person at the Largo Public Library and online via Zoom.
Known as The Legal Genealogist, Judy G. Russell is a genealogist with a law degree who writes and lectures on topics ranging from using court records in family history to understanding DNA testing. Her goal is to help people understand arcane and even impenetrable legal concepts and terms important to family researchers. An internationally known lecturer and award-winning writer, she is also a Certified Genealogist® and Certified Genealogical Lecturer℠ from the Board for Certification of Genealogists®. She consults for fellow genealogical professionals on issues of the law and its effect on genealogical matters. Find her blog at legalgenealogist.com.
During this day-long event, Judy will give four presentations that will offer something for everyone regardless of their experience. The presentations are:
(1) NARA MythBusters: Your Family IS in the Archives
(2) Putting Those Records to Work (Every document we locate has its clear use)
(3) Property Rights and Wrongs – African Americans at the Courthouse
(4) Don’t Forget the Ladies – A Genealogist’s Guide to Women and the Law
In addition to Judy, speakers will present breakout sessions after the lunch break. Lori Coffey will speak on “Technology Tips for Genealogy” and Susan Luce and Denise Manning together will present on “Follow the Yellow Brick Road Through the Forest of Documentary Research and DNA.” The breakout speakers will also present in-person and online via Zoom.
On the day of the event, the library doors and the Zoom meeting will open at 8:00 AM (ET) with the first presentation kicking off at 9:00 AM. A conference booklet, including presentation handouts, will be available to all registrants. All participants who provide their email address will also get a link to all the seminar recordings.
